Job Title: Product Development Engineer – MEP
Location: Shenzhen
Giga builds the electrical infrastructure that powers the modern world of Data Centers, Renewables and Utilities. We manufacture transformers, switchboards, and modular data centers for customers across the United States and the globe to help scale their business-critical operations. Together, our team combines fresh perspectives with deep industry experience to solve real-world problems for our customers.
Position Overview
We are seeking a Product Development Engineer – MEP to support the development of modular data center products with a focus on MEP systems and piping integration. This role will be responsible for designing and optimizing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems while ensuring seamless integration into modular data center solutions.
The ideal candidate has experience in data center MEP engineering, strong piping design knowledge, and is comfortable working directly with global customers and cross-functional teams.
Technical Responsibilities
● Mechanical
○ Cooling system design: chilled water plant, distribution to the white space, heat rejection, and facility-side interface to CDUs and liquid-cooled racks.
○ Load calculations, redundancy topology (N+1, 2N, concurrent maintainability), and part-load/economizer operation for PUE and WUE targets.
○ Ventilation, pressurization, humidity control, and residual air-cooled load; generator, switchgear, and battery room cooling.
○ Airflow and containment strategy for hybrid air/liquid halls.
● Electrical
○ One-line development from utility service through MV/LV distribution, transformers, switchgear, UPS, generators, ATS, and busway to rack PDU.
○ Load flow, short-circuit, protective device coordination, and arc-flash studies; grounding, bonding, lightning protection, and surge protection.
○ Standby power sizing and sequencing, fuel systems, and load-step/block-load analysis.
○ Power monitoring, metering, and EPMS/DCIM integration.
● Piping and plumbing
○ Chilled water, condenser water, and technical cooling loop design: hydraulic modeling, pipe sizing, pump head, expansion, anchoring, and thermal movement.
○ Make-up water, water treatment, filtration, glycol systems, and drainage; leak detection and containment.
○ Fire protection coordination — sprinkler/pre-action, clean agent, and detection — with the fire protection engineer or AHJ.
Key Responsibilities
● Produce and review drawings, P&IDs, schematics, specifications, load schedules, and equipment lists; run clash detection and BIM coordination with structural and architectural.
● Manage design across concept, SD, DD, and IFC; run design reviews and maintain the basis of design.
● Coordinate with A&E consultants, contractors, and vendors; review submittals, shop drawings, and vendor packages.
● Own permitting and code compliance: NFPA 70/70E/75/13, IBC/IMC/IPC, ASHRAE 90.4 and TC 9.9, Uptime Institute Tier criteria, plus local codes and AHJ requirements for target markets.
● Support commissioning through all levels, integrated systems testing, and turnover to operations.
● Develop and optimize MEP systems for modular data center products, with a focus on piping and mechanical system integration.
● Design and review piping layouts, mechanical systems, and utility infrastructure to meet customer and product requirements.
● Collaborate with Mechanical, Electrical, Manufacturing, and Supply Chain teams throughout the product development lifecycle.
● Work directly with customers, including Shell, to understand technical requirements and provide engineering solutions.
● Support product validation, design optimization, and New Product Introduction (NPI).
● Ensure designs comply with applicable engineering standards, quality requirements, and manufacturing processes.
● Drive continuous product improvements through technical analysis and cross-functional collaboration.
Qualifications
● Bachelor's degree or above in Mechanical Engineering, MEP Engineering, HVAC, or a related discipline.
● 5+ years of experience in MEP engineering, preferably within data center infrastructure.
● Strong experience in piping design, mechanical systems, and utility integration.
● Experience with data center MEP systems, including cooling water, chilled water, or process piping.
● Experience working directly with global customers such as Shell or other international clients is highly preferred.
● Professional working proficiency in English with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
● Strong understanding of system integration, engineering design, and manufacturing processes.
● Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with global cross-functional teams.
Preferred Qualifications
● Experience in modular data centers or AI data center infrastructure.
● Experience with liquid cooling systems or thermal management is a plus.
● Familiarity with international engineering standards and MEP best practices.
● Experience working in a global engineering environment.
