Location: Shanghai, China
Since launching the world's first portable wood-pellet fired pizza oven back in 2012, Ooni has grown into an award-winning, multi-national business with a product range that is loved by people around the world.
Our focus has always been on creating innovative products that spark joy in our customers and we're proud of everything we've achieved so far - however, we’re only just getting started.
As part of a refreshed approach, we have identified opportunities to re-prioritise; streamlining and strengthening core processes and activities across the team. This is where you come in. We are looking for a leader with extensive experience in Product Quality and Compliance to head up our Quality, Compliance and Test function. You will set the vision, direction, and goals for the team, ensuring our products meet the highest safety, performance, and regulatory standards across global markets.
The Role
This role is central to our new product development and manufacturing activities and broader business strategy. You will be the final technical authority for complex quality and compliance challenges, establishing decision-making frameworks that empower your team to resolve issues. You will also look to the future needs of the business to align our quality, compliance and testing strategies with Ooni’s global business goals.
If you're excited by the opportunity and would relish the challenge of taking us to the next level, then we'd love to hear from you.
This role needs to spend 4 days on site at our office in Shanghai or with our suppliers at their manufacturing locations. There will also be the need to travel to Edinburgh, Scotland where a large part of your team is located.
Key Responsibilities
You’ll work cross-functionally to ensure that all business leaders (both technical and non-technical) understand the impact of regulatory and quality requirements, and are equipped to make informed decisions.
You’ll build, lead, and mentor a world-class quality, compliance and testing team, creating an environment that attracts, grows, and retains top talent. Ensure process rigour across all areas of the team including but not limited to:
● Design and implement the governance standards for how product requirements are captured and maintained across the product lifecycle.
● Partner with the engineering, manufacturing, and Supply Chain to embed Design for Quality and robust validation and verification processes.
● Establish and evolve the CAPA framework, ensuring root-cause analysis methodologies meet industry-leading standards and drive long-term process optimization.
● Establish and evolve our processes to ensure that all products meet applicable regulatory requirements for gas, chemical, electrical safety and all others, including product certification required with notified bodies and certification agencies.
● Ensure processes are connected with the packaging and labelling team so that documentation, labelling, and user manuals also comply with legal and safety requirements.
● Define the global supplier quality strategy and audit governance model, ensuring our supply chain partners are integrated into Ooni’s long-term quality vision.
● Collaborate closely with sourcing and supplier management team to ensure quality and compliance requirements are included in agreements.
● Act as the escalation point for your team to help them work through supplier challenges or difficult decisions throughout the development process.
● Lead risk management processes.
● Work closely with the customer experience and continuous improvement engineering teams to monitor field performance, product issues, and incident investigations.
● Drive the evolution of testing capabilities, pioneering new methodologies and advanced research to ensure Ooni remains at the forefront of industry technical standards.
You will also:
● Chair internal quality and compliance reviews, reporting to the leadership team.
● Champion a culture of safety, compliance, and accountability across the business.
● Actively collaborate and drive effective integration across departments (Engineering, Supply Chain, Finance), to champion a culture of quality and compliance.
● Contribute to the shaping of Ooni’s broader organizational strategy by providing feedback from day-to-day operations and high-level technical learning.
● Dedicate 50%+ of your time to managing and mentoring the leadership within your team, fostering their growth toward their next career bands and setting the standard for 'excellence' across the department.
● Set new industry and technical standards for Ooni; conduct advanced studies to solve 'unsolvable' technical problems that fall outside of standard operating procedures.
Skills & Experience
Essential:
● Excellent people-leadership and development skills.
● Ability to summarize complex information for Executive-level stakeholders, acting as a persuasive advocate for the Quality, Compliance, and Test function.
● Proven experience in creating and administering decision-making frameworks for functional areas.
● Demonstrated ability to think 12-24 months ahead, aligning functional work with 5-year company goals while balancing day-to-day operational priorities.
● Significant experience in quality (including QMS) and regulatory compliance within consumer products, preferably appliances, cooking, or gas/electrical products both in development and manufacturing.
● Experience acting as a decision-maker for complex technical problems where data may be incomplete or unreliable.
● System-thinking with excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
Desirable:
● Experience in scaling quality & compliance processes for a mid-sized, fast-growing company.
● Experience in the certification of products where no straightforward standard exists and the use of risk-assessment methods.
● Familiarity with sustainability and environmental compliance (WEEE, packaging waste, eco-design).
● Chartered Engineer or equivalent professional accreditation.
● Six Sigma, Lean, or continuous improvement qualifications.
